Butterflies In Space!

By Joseph Munisteri (Butterflies in Space Joe)

Year 69XX:

The Earth is gone; it disappeared a long

time ago. With its loss, all human life disappeared as

well. Perhaps it’s out there somewhere. Who knows?

Certainly not I. All that stuff may be gone, but the

best stuff still lives on- all our hopes, dreams, visions,

ideas. We always wondered what happened to lost

ideas, lost souls, where a person goes when we think

of them, whether they transcend our realm. The

age-old question is out there, who created us? Are

we alone? Is there an afterlife? Do we get a second

chance? The answer lies within the souls of butterflies.

They fly in space, flapping their colorful wings- with

each flap leaving a rainbow amongst the stars! Each

butterfly is unique in its own way, an infinite number

of combinations, one for each idea ever thought,

or will be thought; one for each soul; one for every

couple that loves, or could have loved; one for every

positive thought ever to pop into the mind; a flurry

of positivity, colors galore! No wonder the Aliens,

Martians, Venusians, even Plutonians come to visit

where the earth once stood still; in its place a rainbow

ball of beauty, constantly shifting, creating new ideas,

transferring positivity into the universe. It makes one

such as myself the last human, wonder why we started

hating each other, having wars, preying on the weak,

bullying each other, militarizing our youth, instead of

embracing our inner selves, praising each other for

thinking outside the box. After all, our brain is shaped

more like an orb anyway. Perhaps that’s why I’m here;

standing in the center of the butterfly sphere; standing

at its core, under a crust of colors and emotions, to

show the universe what peace looks like; to give

those in need hope, a second chance at their dreams;

to show others how to live life to its fullest degree,

focusing on the moment at hand; understanding the

universes sweet embrace. Showing others what a

friend is. To lend that helping hand. These butterflies

are a spiritual guide to the universe. Each having a

story to be told behind it. They travel across life times

to see the colors warm embrace. They leave happy and

fulfilled- ready to live once more, as if given a second

chance!

In loving memory to all those whom we have lost to

suffering of any kind, be it mental or physical, and

to all those who are still suffering. There is hope,

people who care! Life’s journey can be rough, but

it gets better in time. Embrace yourself and follow

your dreams. Let your heart show you the way. You

are the butterflies’ embrace!

Butterfly Space Opera

ACT 1 - THE BALLET

By Joseph Munisteri (Butterflies in Space Joe)

*Based on the pieces from his “Butterfly Space Opera” NFT collection on MintGoldDust.com

The stage is set, and the mothership theater goes dark as a woman with gorgeous wings graces the stage. A symphony begins to play in the background, each note drifting off into the stars all around them. Each haunting note sends shivers down the audience's spines, those that have them of course. The woman opens her mouth and begins to sing, her vocals in sync with the orchestra’s symphonic melodies. With each new note, she undergoes a transformation. Her wings rapidly shift color, each audience member perceiving the colors differently under the bright lights of the stage. While still singing, her metamorphosis comes to a crescendo as she is revealed to be a butterfly. Before the audience can even catch their breath from the transformation, the mothership begins to shake, and the air becomes perfumed with the scent of flowers from across the galaxy. Everyone's senses are ablaze with the harmony of the universe. Next up, the ballet dancer takes the stage. Each movement thought out carefully, lighter than could possibly be imagined. The dancer leaps and soars into the crowd, the singing butterfly following just behind. The crowd goes wild as they float and dance above the crowd, defying gravity. As the dancer and the butterfly dance in the sky, the ship's interior becomes transparent, revealing the vastness of space and the universe in all its delight and wonder. Each star shines as brightly as an artist's heart. As the dancer tip toes above them the audience is in awe as the butterfly’s wings shape shift back and forth with various colors and shapes, becoming a muse to even the stars.

The magnificent ship flaps its golden wings. Onboard it carries many passengers, all enjoying the performance onboard. The ship itself was like a living butterfly, constantly fluttering through the cosmos. The passengers felt a large rumble and chalked it up to the theatrics of the performance, but the captain felt like something was off. Fearing a solar flare or meteor attack, they decide to hop through a nearby wormhole, hoping it would save the ship. The captain knew they would have to find an excuse to gather the crew to alert them while not causing a commotion amongst the passengers.

The captain devised a plan to host a meeting with the crew during the intermission of “The Ballet” in which the passengers could enjoy the rare view of inside the wormhole via the windows of the ship. Golden glitter scattered across the butterfly stars.

This only bought the captain some time from the passengers and audience panicking from noticing something was not right with the ships flight, eventually, the captain would need to do as all great leaders do and take responsibility by bearing the bad news with the ship's crew and passengers of the incoming detour they had begun to take.

ACT 4 - The Detour

By Joseph Munisteri (Butterflies in Space Joe)

*Based on the pieces from his “Butterfly Space Opera” NFT collection on MintGoldDust.com

The butterfly shuttle appears in the sky, it gently glides out from its portal just above the unknown planet. Its wings open wide as it prepares its emergency landing. The captain of the butterfly ship announces to the passengers that the ship encountered some turbulence during the beautiful performance held by the performers during the ballet.

The captain explains to the passengers the importance of practicing safety protocols such as taking a detour for an emergency landing. They explain that this detour will allow their crew to check the ship for any potential damage that may have occurred. It is further explained that the butterfly ship is self healing and by embarking on this detour it will allow any damages the ship may have encountered to repair itself, such as growing new scales on its wings and shedding damaged scales.

The planet they touch down on appears to have been untouched by a living soul, but according to the short entry about it in previous interstellar explorer logs, it is deemed safe to explore. All the passengers line up at the door and are each given tracking devices that record biometric data in case they come across anything interesting. The passengers don’t mind the detour, they came on this ship for adventure, and exploring a new planet is just that. The captain also alerts the passengers that the device will alert them when the ship is ready to leave. The ship is on a strict schedule and will leave promptly 30 minutes after the alarm. Headed with the warning, the passengers venture out into the unknown while the captain gets to work.

Act 5 – Space Trip

By Joseph Munisteri (Butterflies in Space Joe)

*Based on the pieces from his “Butterfly Space Opera” NFT collection on MintGoldDust.com

As the passengers of the Butterfly ship venture out to explore and discover the beauties of the planet they detoured to, the captain begins their own journey. The captain sits at the control panel inside the Butterfly ship and places their hand on one of the controls. Suddenly, the captain loses all of their sight, in return they gain visuals and visions that appear through their mind. The captain feels as if they are in sync with the Butterfly ship. They feel all the pain from the damage it had taken, yet they also feel all the healing as well. This feeling of healing invokes a positive energy to flood through the captains body, as if to shock them. As this shock of energy flows through the captain, they begin to embark upon a journey through space and time in their own mind. The visuals the captain takes in are stunning. This leads our captain to understand the future aspects of their journey as they are now in sync, both body and mind with the Butterfly ship. They understand that this is only just the beginning and something larger than their mind can comprehend is coming. Then suddenly. The captains vision jumps back to normal and they now see the world around them once more. As this happens, a member of the crew has entered the room the captain is in, to alert them that the ship has healed and repaired itself. The captain summons the passengers so they may continue their journey!

Act 6 – The Moon Ballet

By Joseph Munisteri (Butterflies in Space Joe)

*Based on the pieces from his “Butterfly Space Opera” NFT collection on MintGoldDust.com

Inside the Butterfly spaceship, the audience gathers once more. The symphony begins to play, the stage transforms into a series of moons. The audience is in awe as their perception of the sights in front of them changes. They gaze and wonder about how the stage somehow got larger in front of their own eyes(or other optical perception parts) without them noticing. The audience begins to settle down as the Ballet dancers step onto the stage and begin their performance. An opera singer sings, their voice in sync with the symphonic melody. The Ballet dancers twirl about. As they spin, their wings begin to form. The Moon’s in the background begin rotating around the Ballet dancers. Everything is in sync. The audience is in deep meditation, as they ponder about the universe and it’s mighty dance with itself. The audience continues to be stunned as the Ballet dancers finish up their flawless dance with the many moons of the universe. As the performance comes to an end, the audience questions who the real performers are, the Ballet dancers or the many planets and moons of the universe as they dance among the stars.

After the performance, the audience and the performers each exit the ships chamber, as they each exit they find themselves stunned by an unexpected surprise.

Act 7 – Cosmic Horror

By Joseph Munisteri (Butterflies in Space Joe)

*Based on the pieces from his “Butterfly Space Opera” NFT collection on MintGoldDust.com

As the Moon Ballet is performed for the passengers of the ship, the captain of the Butterfly ship embarks on a performance of their own. They must navigate the ship through some very treacherous parts of the cosmos. The captain reflects back to their visions shared with the Butterfly ship, then notices a cosmic Horror in the distance. The captain mutters to themselves “this is the thing that should not be!”

As the ship passes through the voids of space, it begins to get attacked by the Cosmic entities. These Cosmic entities do not do any physical harm to the captain nor the Butterfly ship, instead it reaches out with limbs that are beyond comprehension and gently touches the ship. This is repeated, over and over again. The captain is glad that the passengers are unable to view the Cosmic Horror that their voyage has undertaken once more. They are glad the passengers and performers are all in a performance chamber that defies the rules of physics and the space-time continuum. They are safe there, the captain reminds themselves.

Suddenly, the Cosmic entity touches the Butterfly ship once more, just as the Moon Ballet is coming to a close. As the entity touches the Butterfly ship, an emergency procedure gets activated in the performance chamber, sending it across the universe to new worlds unexplored. The captains shared visions are becoming true, although unbeknownst to them. The Chamber still remaining on the ship, but as each passenger exits, they will enter a new world. Finally the captain navigates the Butterfly ship beyond the Cosmic terrors and prepares the shop for landing to assess the damage to the ship.

1. Characters: Players select one of the alien explorers, each specializing in a different GLOBE Observer protocol:

  • Crystal Moths: Experts in cloud identification and cover.

  • Caterpillar Queens: Strategic leaders specializing in land cover mapping.

  • Guardians of the Cocoon Kingdom: Focus on tree measurements and health.

  • Quantum Butterflies: Analyze mosquito habitat data and correlations with local weather.

  • Chrysalis Shamans: Connect all data streams and propose actionable conservation strategies.

2. Tools:

GLOBE Observer App: Used by players to upload data and compare it with global datasets.

3. Scientific Method Flow: Players follow the GLOBE.gov scientific method:

  • 1. Ask Questions

  • 2. Develop a Hypothesis

  • 3. Plan the Investigation

  • 4. Collect Data

  • 5. Analyze Data

  • 6. Draw Conclusions

  • 7. Communicate Results

Gameplay and Story:

Step 1: Ask Questions

The Butterfly Space Rescue team arrives on Earth and identifies key environmental challenges based on their specialization.

Example Mission Questions:

  • Clouds: “How does cloud cover affect local temperatures and weather patterns?”

  • Mosquito Habitat: “Are water sources nearby contributing to mosquito populations?”

  • Land Cover: “How are changes in vegetation affecting the local ecosystem?”

  • Trees: “What is the impact of tree height and canopy health on biodiversity?”

Step 2: Develop Hypotheses

Players develop hypotheses tailored to their mission:

  • Clouds: “Areas with more cumulus clouds will experience cooler daytime temperatures.”

  • Mosquito Habitat: “Mosquito habitats will increase near standing water sources with vegetation.”

  • Land Cover: “Deforested areas will have lower biodiversity compared to forested ones.”

  • Trees: “Taller trees will correlate with higher levels of biodiversity.”

Step 3: Plan the Investigation

Players decide on a plan for data collection, using GLOBE Observer protocols:

  • 1. Clouds: Take photos of the sky, identifying cloud types and estimating cloud cover percentages.

  • 2. Mosquito Habitat Mapper: Photograph water sources, identify potential mosquito breeding sites, and test for larvae.

  • 3. Land Cover: Take pictures of the landscape, identifying vegetation types, urban areas, and water features.

  • 4. Trees: Measure tree height using the app’s AR tools and note canopy density

Step 4: Collect Data

Players head into the field to gather data, uploading observations directly to the GLOBE Observer app:

  • Crystal Moths record cloud cover and types, noting how they change throughout the day.

  • Guardians of the Cocoon Kingdom use the app’s AR tools to measure tree height and upload photos.

  • Quantum Butterflies identify and map mosquito habitats, marking larvae locations and potential risks.

  • Caterpillar Queens document land cover changes by photographing different landscapes.

Step 5: Analyze Data

After data collection, players analyze their findings:

1. Use the app to compare their data with GLOBE datasets, identifying trends or anomalies.

2. Discuss questions like:

  • How does local cloud cover compare with regional trends?

  • Are mosquito habitats linked to nearby weather patterns?

  • What are the dominant land cover types in the area, and how have they changed over time?

  • Are tree heights in the region consistent with GLOBE data?

Step 6: Draw Conclusions

Players interpret their findings, answering their original questions and revisiting their hypotheses. For example:

  • Clouds: “Increased cloud cover correlates with cooler temperatures and higher humidity.”

  • Mosquito Habitat: “Standing water with vegetation is more likely to host mosquito larvae.”

  • Land Cover: “Urban areas have less vegetation, impacting local biodiversity.”

  • Trees: “Regions with taller trees have more canopy cover and greater biodiversity.”

Step 7: Communicate Results

Players upload their final findings and reports to the GLOBE Observer app and share within the RPG:

  • 1. Crystal Moths present a sky atlas with cloud observations.

  • 2. Caterpillar Queens share a land cover map showing the distribution of vegetation and urban areas.

  • 3. Quantum Butterflies present a mosquito habitat risk map.

  • 4. Guardians of the Cocoon Kingdom share a forest health report, including tree height and canopy density.

Learning Outcomes:

This RPG helps players:

  • Understand and apply the GLOBE.gov scientific method.

  • Develop skills in data collection and analysis using the GLOBE Observer app.

  • Explore the interconnectedness of Earth’s systems by analyzing clouds, mosquito habitats, land cover, and trees.

  • Contribute to real-world citizen science while learning in a gamified environment.
